About Vashon Theatre Fest
Drawing on the Island’s treasure trove of theatrical talent, VRT’s celebration of theatre will bring to the stage familiar tales such as Prospero’s fall from grace in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, classic folk music in Woody Guthrie’s American Song, innovative movement by UMO Ensemble in Fail Better: Beckett Moves UMO, readings of new plays and performances for families. And, in the second weekend, New York actor Terri Weagant brings four performances of her acclaimed one-woman show Bo-Nita to the Kay White Hall.
This year’s theatre festival is the start of an annual tradition for VRT. Already, in its first year of operation, despite the pandemic, VRT has built a track record of outstanding theatre in keeping with its mission of producing exceptional theatre that is thought-provoking, intimate, story-driven and brings to light issues that are meaningful to our time and place on earth. Opening with a series of original radio plays titled HOME in October, VRT earned outstanding reviews and attention from around the Puget Sound region. Since then, VRT applied COVID safe innovation to staging Orson Welles’ War Of The Worlds for Halloween and Sam Shepherd’s Savage Love for Valentine’s Day on Vashon Center for the Arts television. The Puget Sound Theatrical community is already anticipating more high-quality professional theatre in this summer’s festival. Bryan Willis, playwright-in-residence for the Northwest Playwrights Alliance at Seattle Repertory Theatre, says “Charlotte Tiencken always creates quality and I’m excited to see what she and her troupe of talented Vashon Island professionals will bring to the stage this summer.”
Fest ticket packages for theatre lovers go on sale May 17 at Brown Paper Tickets. Weekend passes providing access to all performances are available with special rates for students and discounts to participating Island restaurants and lodgings.
